With over 30 years of local expertise, Zoe Napier shares insights into the growing trend of urban dwellers making the leap to North Essex and why this area is capturing the hearts of those in search of space, tranquility, and community.
Having lived in the northern part of Essex for over 30 years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible draw of this region. North Essex, with its spectacular countryside and rich history, is increasingly attracting buyers looking for a rural escape. As urban dwellers seek more space, cleaner air, and a sense of community, this picturesque region is becoming the go-to destination.
Over four decades in the property industry have given me a unique perspective on the geographical movements of buyers. Traditionally, people made small, incremental moves within the county – from Epping to Ingatestone, and then from Ingatestone to The Easters, for example. However, the pandemic has spurred greater leaps of faith, with many buyers moving out of London and venturing much further afield. These new residents often find themselves pleasantly surprised by the rural idyll that awaits them in North Essex, far beyond the urban edges of the county.
Essex is a large county, offering over 1,500 square miles of beautiful countryside, and North Essex is home to some of its most stunning landscapes. In parts of the county, particularly where rivers meander through the terrain, you might feel as though you’ve been transported to the Dales. The Colne Valley, Dedham Vale, and Stour Valley on the Suffolk border are particularly popular, known for their rolling hills and picturesque settings.
Living in the countryside comes with its own set of challenges and quirks. For instance, the harvest season in late July and August is a busy time for farmers in Essex, particularly in this arable farming region. During this period, the air can be filled with dust, and the hum of combines working late into the night is a common sound. However, many rural dwellers see this as a wonderful time of year—a reminder of the hard work that goes into maintaining the beautiful landscapes they enjoy year-round.
For those new to rural living, it’s important to embrace these seasonal activities as part of the rural lifestyle. The rewards of living in such a stunning area far outweigh the occasional inconvenience.
With its combination of natural beauty, community spirit, and accessibility, North Essex offers an idyllic setting for those seeking a change from urban life. Whether you’re drawn by the spectacular landscapes, the charming villages, or the opportunity for a more peaceful way of life, North Essex is a destination that continues to grow in popularity.
If you’re considering a move to this beautiful part of the world, I’d be delighted to share more about the properties available and why so many are choosing to call North Essex home.
